Evolution of Ethical Considerations in AI

2026 marks the 10-year anniversary of the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems and the publication of Ethically Aligned Design, Version One (EAD), a landmark effort that helped define the global conversation around ethical AI before the topic entered the mainstream. Over the past decade, this work has evolved from a foundational framework into a growing family of IEEE 7000-series standards that provide practical guidance for designing, developing, and deploying technology that prioritizes human values and societal well-being.

IEEE Global Initiative Launches

IEEE SA launched the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethics of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems, bringing together engineers, technologists, ethicists, policymakers, philosophers, social scientists, business leaders, and academics from around the world. The Initiative begins developing a practical framework for designing AI and autonomous systems that prioritize human well-being.

IEEE 7010-2020

IEEE publishes IEEE 7010™-2020, the first completed standard in the IEEE 7000 Series. This recommended practice establishes wellbeing metrics relating to human factors directly affected by intelligent and autonomous systems and establishes a baseline for the types of objective and subjective data these systems should analyze and include (in their programming and functioning) to proactively increase human wellbeing.

IEEE 7000™-2021 Published

IEEE publishes IEEE 7000™-2021, which provides organizations with a repeatable engineering process for identifying, documenting, and addressing ethical concerns throughout system design and development. IEEE 7000-2021 is recommended for use by organizations that seek to apply broader ethical value criteria and minimize risk, thereby helping to strengthen relationships with their end users and customers. Organizations may apply this first of its kind standard across multiple levels including concept exploration, system requirements definition, or development of new or revised products or services.

2021 - IEEE CertifAIEd™ Launched

IEEE CertifAIEd was launched to help organizations demonstrate that AI-enabled products are designed and implemented responsibly. The program provides independent assessment and certification of autonomous and intelligent systems against ethical criteria focused on transparency, accountability, algorithmic bias, and privacy, giving organizations a structured way to evaluate AI risks, strengthen responsible design practices, and build trust with customers, regulators, and other stakeholders.

7000 Series Expands

Additional standards and recommended practices continue advancing through development and publication, covering topics including transparency, algorithmic bias, child and student data governance, personal data, employer data governance, well-being metrics, and other critical aspects of responsible AI engineering.

Help shape the future by joining any working group marked with a “P” (Project) to participate in standards currently under development.

Many IEEE Standards are available for free, including IEEE 7000™, through IEEE’s GET program for AI Ethics and Governance Standards.

Industry Connections

IEEE SA’s Industry Connections (IC) program brings organizations and individuals together to collaborate on rapidly changing technologies and incubate ideas that can lead to new standards and related products and services.

The Global Initiative on Ethics and Autonomous Systems began as an Industry Connections activity, demonstrating how early collaboration can help shape the future of technology and standardization.

Current Industry Connections activities include:

Global Artificial Intelligence Systems (AIS) Flourishing Initiative is continuing the existing work of the IEEE Standards Association focused on well-being and technology, building on the IEEE 7010™-2020, IEEE Recommended Practice for Assessing the Impact of Autonomous and Intelligent Systems on Human Well-Being. The group is also drawing on the well-being chapter of Ethically Aligned Design.

Bridging the AI Transparency Gap: A Factsheet Framework for Healthcare Professionals is proposed as a standardized, structured document to be completed by developers and made available to healthcare professional users.

Data Centers: Standards Needs Analysis and Recommendations: The goal of this initiative is to identify the current state of standards relevant to data centers, and the anticipated future state needed, and to define a path for the standards community to reach that future state.

Standardization Roadmap on Quantum Applications: The goal of this initiative is the development of a Roadmap addressing business problems at various points on the timeline for the large-scale deployment of quantum-based technologies.

There are many Industry Connections programs available for you to join and be a part of the global community bringing standards to life.
