About IEEE CertifAIEd

The IEEE CertifAIEd AI Ethics Program was pioneered through the IEEE development process by a diverse, interdisciplinary group of AI Ethics experts, and uniquely addresses criteria including Algorithmic Bias, Ethical Transparency, Privacy, and Accountability as outlined in the Ontological Specifications previously released under Creative Commons License. The criteria are customizable to specific applications and industry verticals. IEEE CertifAIEd is compatible with upcoming regulations such as the EU AI Act.

IEEE CertifAIEd reflects the IEEE Standards Association’s principles-to-practice approach by establishing a program to inspire trust and a means towards responsible implementation of AI systems, which would demonstrate an organization’s commitment to upholding human values, dignity, and well-being, and to respecting, protecting, and preserving fundamental human rights.

The program provides:

  • A unique, visible, differentiating AI Ethics certification mark supported by comprehensive ethical criteria that affirms an organization’s commitment to upholding human values, dignity, and well-being, and to respecting, protecting, and preserving fundamental human rights.
  • Independent AIS Ethics certification services for products, services, or systems that comprise of or support AIS, conveying an organization’s capability to fulfill applicable criteria to foster trust and facilitate the adoption and use of AI products and services.
  • A novel end-to-end, cross-industry framework that can be utilized by organizations to prepare for future risk-based regulations, enhancing confidence in public and private enterprises, while mitigating risks, liabilities and adverse impacts on organizations’ reputations and market share.

IEEE CertifAIEd Key Principles

There are four key areas that provide the framework for IEEE CertifAIEd certification:

  • Transparency criteria relate to values embedded in a system design, and the openness and disclosure of choices made for development and operation
  • Accountability criteria recognize that the system/service autonomy and learning capacities are the results of algorithms and computational processes designed by humans and organizations that remain responsible for their outcomes
  • Algorithmic bias criteria relate to the prevention of systematic errors and repeatable undesirable behaviors that create unfair outcomes
  • Privacy criteria are aimed at respecting the private sphere of life and public identity of an individual, group, or community, upholding dignity
