IEEE SA’s rich community services, including neutral, global platforms, conformity assessment, certification programs, and collaborative approaches to standards development, facilitate standards related initiatives for a human centric digital and green transformation of the mobility eco-system at global scale to make increasingly automated and seamlessly integrated transportation safer, more sustainable and accessible, convenient and affordable for all.

Raising the World’s Standards in Mobility

From highways and railroads to skies and the oceans, mobility is undergoing disruptive technological changes. Today, we’re in a new era of connected and automated mobility, powered by information and communication technologies (ICT) and booming electric vehicles (EV) and mobility-as-a-service (MaaS) industries. With rapid innovation, however, come challenges; IEEE SA’s global collaborative platform unites academic expert volunteers, industry players, policymakers, and governmental bodies to address public trust in leading edge technology based products and services, sustainability, and safety through the development of technology standards and interoperable solutions.

Key Areas of Focus

As part of the Mobility focus, we engage in three key workstreams that address common challenges and offer collaborative opportunities.

Safe Automated Mobility

Future vehicles will be increasingly connected, automated, and smart due to computerization and software-embedded intelligence. While vehicle manufacturers drive the evolution of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) toward fully automated cars, the Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) sector’s aspiration is to leapfrog autonomous driving.

Sustainable Mobility

The green transformation of transportation of freight and people calls for de-carbonization of the mobility sector. The ultimate goal is to end up with climate-neutral transportation and closed-loop material flows for a circular economy of the sector.

Vehicular mobility

Inclusive Integrated Mobility

There is a shift from individually owned vehicles toward interconnected, shared mobility solutions used as an if-and-when-needed service (MaaS). User-centric multi-modal MaaS offers seamlessly integrate private, shared, and public transportation. It includes not only traditional modes of transportation like railways, but also future modes like automated electrified Airtaxis.
