This standard specifies Physical (PHY) and Media Access Control (MAC) layers of the medium frequency band (less than 12 MHz) broadband power line communication technology for smart grid applications based on Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). This standard further extends the capabilities defined in the IEEE 1901.1-2018 and the IEEE 1901.3-2025. This standard also specifies the data link layer of a hybrid physical layer (PHY) ,consisting of the physical layer (PHY) defined in IEEE 1901.1-2018, the radio frequency (RF) communication technology physical layer defined in IEEE 1901.3-2025, and the enhanced physical layer defined in this standard. This standard provides the mechanism for coexistence of the full family of standards (IEEE 1901, IEEE 1901.1, IEEE 1901.3) on the same network. This standard provides an identification mechanism so that a node joining the network can properly select the protocol version (IEEE 1901.1, IEEE 1901.3, and IEEE P1901.5) and mode of operation. This standard addresses applications and use cases for smart grid, photovoltaic energy system, vehicle-to-grid (V2G) and Vehicle/Grid Integration (VGI), smart home/building, and other data distribution applications. The standard addresses necessary security requirements that enable the use of this technology for mission critical and security-sensitive services and applications.
