Navigating standards development can be a challenging journey, whether a first-time participant or a senior IEEE SA member. To support an ever-expanding portfolio of global standards, we have launched a new Training + Development program to enable the success of our global working groups.

Drawing upon the expertise of current IEEE leaders, the Training + Development program identifies challenges and tailors training solutions based on tried and true methodologies for continuous improvement throughout the standards development process. Through the sharing of best practices for standards development, the goal is to empower IEEE SA leadership, as well as offer courses to help prepare and inform the leaders of tomorrow.

The new program offers complimentary online courses for IEEE SA members. It covers a range of valuable professional development content to help individuals become more efficient in advancing technology standards that bring benefit to humanity.

The first course, IEEE SA Standards Working Group Chair Fundamentals, provides an overview of IEEE standards development processes, showcases standards development best practices, and shares working group management techniques. It also covers the legal responsibilities of standards developers.

Topics Include:

  • Legal responsibilities of standards developers
  • The IEEE standards development process
  • Project management techniques
  • Project approval process (NesCom)
  • Writing an IEEE standard
  • Conducting a successful ballot
  • Draft standard approval process (RevCom)
  • Editing and publishing and much more.

After completing the course, participants will understand the legal need for openness and consensus to ensure due process, learn how and when to submit PARs and drafts, know how to handle copyrighted material and trademarks, and have a better understanding of the IEEE approval process.

This course will be available on the IEEE Learning Network. An edition in Mandarin will be available in fall 2020. While the course is primarily geared to leaders of IEEE standards working groups, anyone involved in the IEEE standards development process will benefit from the completion of this course.

We will continue to release new online courses offering the tools and information standards developers need to produce high quality, market-driven standards in a timely manner.
