THE ADOPTION PROCESS

Adoption of an IEEE Standard by Another Organization
IEEE is a focal point for various technologies and is willing to share its expertise with standards developers worldwide. One method for doing this is through adoption. Adoption of IEEE standards by national, regional, and international standards organizations is encouraged. This adoption is a formal process that may include a reciprocal agreement between IEEE and the organization adopting the IEEE standard.

The process for the adoption of an IEEE Standard can be found in the IEEE-SA Standards Board Operations Manual, subclause 5.6.1.

Adoption of a Non-IEEE Standard
IEEE may adopt a standard when modifications to the standard are needed or if a group wishes a standard to become an American National Standard. Prior to initiating the adoption process, the working group should notify the Senior Administrator, Business Development via email.

When adopting a non-IEEE standard, technical deviations are permitted provided that they are clearly identified and explained. In the case of an adoption from ISO or IEC, the standard being adopted shall contain the document being adopted in its entirety along with the modifications to the document. Modifications can include:

  • Less stringent requirements, etc.
  • More stringent requirements, includes additional tests, etc.
  • Differing requirements.

The process for the adoption of a non-IEEE Standard can be found in the IEEE-SA Standards Board Operations Manual, subclause 5.6.2
