About the Activity
Wireless LAN is the most popular access technology nowadays and affords about 60% of data transmission in access networks. User experience issues of Wireless LAN networks are observed as follows:
According to an IoT Analytics investigation, there will be 17.6 billion IoT connections in the world at the end of 2023 and 31% of them are based on WLAN technology, especially in smart home scenarios where IoT devices such as refrigerators, air conditioning, washing machines have accesses to the network via wireless LAN.
In these WLAN-based IoT connections, access failures and loss of connection often happen even if the access is successful. The CMCC (China Mobile Communications Corporate) investigation shows that 30% of customer complaints in WLAN-based IoT are about connections (access failure or lost connection). For the user’s experience, we need to recognize the reason for the connection problem in WLAN of IoT scenario and find ways to improve the WLAN-based IoT Connections (dedicated radio interface for IoT within 802.11)
Unlike cellular networks which are operated & maintained professionally, most WLAN is deployed at home without any maintenance. If there is a failure (access failure, video conference lagging) with the WLAN network, the users are not able to address the issues. This could be done by having the WLAN network troubleshoot on its own and recovering from the failure without user intervention.
Goals of the Activity
The goal of this IC activity is to focus on improving user experience from multiple dimensions, including improving a robust wireless LAN connection, implementing APP requirements, and promoting self-operation in WLAN networks.
