Project Details
The scope of this guide includes corrosion of copper shields in jacketed and unjacketed extruded dielectric cables rated 5 to 46 kV. The function of the metallic shield and consequences of significant loss of shield wires, straps or tapes are discussed. The causes of corrosion in cable metallic shields, and the methods available to assess this corrosion are described. Recommendations are made for the mitigation and control of corrosion of cable metallic shields.

The primary focus of this guide is unjacketed, underground distribution cable installed direct buried or in conduit. The causes of corrosion in cable concentric neutral wire and strap and the methods available to detect this corrosion are described. The purpose of the concentric neutral and consequences of significant loss of the concentric neutral are discussed. Recommendations are made for the mitigation and control of the cable concentric neutral corrosion.
