IIoT & Smart Manufacturing
The impact of IoT and Industrial IoT is driving Smart Manufacturing and many companies and industries are adopting IoT frameworks and technologies to advance their manufacturing process. IIoT will drive manufacturing efficiency and ROI. High impact and productivity gains provided by IIoT through IoT connectivity protocols, Integration of IT/OT business and TSN. Industrial IoT is moving towards Edge Computing to be more efficient and address latency requirements. Edge Computing with AI/ML modeling at the edge will drive most of the IIoT transformation in the next 1-3 years. Trust, Identity and Security will be core focus as IIoT adoption takes place. IIoT and Smart Manufacturing will continue to be a key priority in the next 3-5 years.
The IEEE SA Foundational practice will focus on this area and look to answer questions like: How can the building blocks of tomorrow enable better, sustainable cities for humanity today?
More than 100B+ connected devices by 2030 per estimates, driven through Smart Phones along with smart home devices and wellness devices driving quality of life and comfort (and connectivity). B2C market is significantly driving adoption of IoT in the consumer products - wearables, gaming and including Internet of Clothing/Food with smart embedded sensors; AR/VR, Edge Computing will have a significant play in consumer applications; Non-functional requirements and TIPPSS (Trust, Identity, Privacy, Protection, Security and Safety) will be a core priority for IIOT as well as consumer IoT applications.. Driving previously unconnected people into a connected world.
For this focus area, the Foundational Technologies practice will try to find ways to help developers, manufacturers and producers to create solutions that respect individual privacy and trust without loss in efficiency and performance at an affordable price and scalable means.
Infrastructure for Emerging Applications
Technologies such as Quantum Computing, AR/VR, Blockchain and next generation connectivity protocols will drive future applications and enable new markets - addressing speed and latency requirements; Emerging Applications such as remote surgery driven by AR/VR, and Quantum computing enabling Cybersecurity, Pharmaceutical Research, Data Analytics, new modeling and optimization solutions; Energy efficiency and sustainability needs to be addressed.
