Timing in Data Centers

About the Activity

IEEE Std 1588 specifies the Precision Time Protocol (PTP), used by a wide variety of applications to precisely synchronize time within a network. Due to various use cases such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), there is a growing need for usage of PTP in data center networks.

The motivation for this IC activity is to discuss usage of PTP for precise synchronization of time in data center networks. The discussion can include use cases, performance needs, topologies, assumptions regarding equipment, and so on. The goal is to connect PTP experts with experts in the data center industry.

High level use cases include:

  • Use of PTP within a single data center
  • Use of PTP in the interconnection between multiple data centers

Goals of the Activity

The deliverables from this IC activity are intended for use as input to standards development.

Although the focus of discussion is expected to relate to PTP, other timing technologies are expected to be discussed in the IC activity. This includes the Network Time Protocol (NTP) standardized by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), and various Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technologies.
