Spatial Computing for Metaverse Initiative

About the Activity

The technologies in the metaverse can be divided into three core technologies and five supporting technologies. Three core technologies are spatial computing, persistent computing and trusted computing. The five supporting technologies are computing, data, storage, communication and AI.

It is generally agreed that metaverse will have a profound impact on our daily work, play, and life, across all industries and sectors, reshaping the economy and society for all humankind. However, there are many hypes, confusions, and misunderstandings about metaverse in the market and in the public. Virtual reality and augmented reality technologies also known as spatial computing in the metaverse are not yet mature and face issues such as high costs, subpar user experiences, and discomfort during extended wear, among others. Additionally, various manufacturers are taking their own paths, leading to a lack of hardware and software compatibility.

The spatial computing for metaverse initiative is to focus on spatial computing technologies such as human-machine-interface, sensors and auctors, brain-machine-interface, AR glasses and head-mounted-display technologies.

Goals of the Activity

The motivation of this initiative is to provide guidelines and reference implementations for spatial computing where users can comfortably and enjoyably use spatial computing devices at a low cost while enhancing the compatibility of spatial computing technology’s hardware and software.

The end goal of this initiative is to promote the development of spatial computing technology to achieve its widespread adoption.

Getting Involved

Who Should Get Involved

This work will serve and benefit all the markets where spatial computing technologies are used. Especially, the emerging metaverse market which needs to provide immersive experiences to the users.

All the entities that are involved with the businesses related to spatial computing technologies, especially those who are engaged in VR/AR/MR technologies.
