Information on sources of no-load and load sound in liquid-immersed power transformers is provided in this guide. Industry standards that deal with transformer sound and factors affecting sound levels of transformers in field operation are also discussed. Guidelines are provided for the selection of suitable methods of reduction of transformer sound at the design stage, during manufacturing, and on site. Procedures that are typically used for determining required sound levels of power transformers on site are described. The intent is to provide users and manufacturers with sufficient background that can help produce power transformers that meet limits on sound level required by local sound ordinances.

Other Activities From This Working Group
Current projects that have been authorized by the IEEE SA Standards Board to develop a standard.
No Active Projects
Standards approved by the IEEE SA Standards Board that are within the 10-year lifecycle.
No Active Standards
These standards have been replaced with a revised version of the standard, or by a compilation of the original active standard and all its existing amendments, corrigenda, and errata.
No Superseded Standards
These standards have been removed from active status through a ballot where the standard is made inactive as a consensus decision of a balloting group.
No Inactive-Withdrawn Standards
These standards are removed from active status through an administrative process for standards that have not undergone a revision process within 10 years.
C57.136-2000
IEEE Guide for Sound Level Abatement and Determination for Liquid-Immersed Power Transformers and Shunt Reactors Rated Over 500 kVA
Reaffirmed September 22, 2005. Guidelines are provided for the selection of suitable sound reduction methods in oil-immersed power transformers and shunt reactors over 500 kVA.Sound-producing sources within transformers and reactors are discussed.Sound abatement procedures are described for achieving various levels of sound reduction in transformer and shunt reactor installations.
