Guiding principles are included for the development of test procedures for - Thermal evaluation of electrical insulating materials (EIM) - Thermal evaluation of electrical insulation systems (EIS) - Thermal classification of EIS for rating electric equipment The principles are presented in the following order: - Clause 4, General concepts - Clause 6, Evaluation of the thermal capability of EIM - Clause 7, Limiting temperatures and their measurement for EIS - Clause 8, Thermal evaluation of EIS In the application of these principles, variations are necessary to suit the widely different types of equipment and service conditions that are considered in equipment standards. When specific equipment, IEEE, or other recognized standards based on these principles are available, they should take precedence over this recommended practice.

Other Activities From This Working Group
Current projects that have been authorized by the IEEE SA Standards Board to develop a standard.
No Active Projects
Standards approved by the IEEE SA Standards Board that are within the 10-year lifecycle.
No Active Standards
These standards have been replaced with a revised version of the standard, or by a compilation of the original active standard and all its existing amendments, corrigenda, and errata.
98-2002
IEEE Standard for the Preparation of Test Procedures for the Thermal Evaluation of Solid Electrical Insulating Materials
Reaffirmed September 2007. Principles for the development of test procedures to evaluate the thermal endurance of solid electrical insulating materials in air are given in this standard.
These standards have been removed from active status through a ballot where the standard is made inactive as a consensus decision of a balloting group.
No Inactive-Withdrawn Standards
These standards are removed from active status through an administrative process for standards that have not undergone a revision process within 10 years.

IEEE Recommended Practice - General Principles for Temperature Limits in the Rating of Electrical Equipment and for the Evaluation of Electrical Insulation
This recommended practice is intended to serve in the preparation of standards that are principally concerned with the thermal endurance of EIM and simple combinations of such materials, with the establishment of limiting temperatures of EIS, and with the provision of general principles for thermal classification of EIS.
