This recommended practice specifies a standard language for comprehensive music representation. The language provides a meta-representation of music information within a multilayered environment, which achieves integration among general (metadata), structural, notational, computer-driven performance, and audio layers. The recommended practice integrates music representation with already defined and commonly accepted standards and formats. The recommended practice provides both an interchange format among different applications and an aggregator for heterogeneous music related contents. The standard addresses software dealing with music information, e.g., digital score editors, optical music recognition (OMR) systems, web and mobile apps, musical databases and archives, and performance, composition and musicology-oriented applications.

IEEE Recommended Practice for Defining a Commonly Acceptable Musical Application Using XML
This project will develop an XML application defining a standard language for symbolic music representation. The language will be a meta-representation of music information for describing and processing said music information within a multi-layered environment, for achieving integration among structural, score, MIDI, and digital sound levels of representation. Furthermore, the proposed standard should integrate music representation with already defined and accepted common standards. The standard will be accepted by any kind of software dealing with music information, e.g. score editing, OMR systems, music performance, musical databases, and composition and musicological applications.
