IEEE and the Ministry of Economy of the United States of Mexico Sign General Cooperation Agreement on Standards Development

PISCATAWAY, NJ, 15 May 2018 – IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA) today announced the signing of an MoU with the Ministry of Economy of the United States of Mexico. The agreement will help facilitate the development of Technical Regulations – Normas Oficiales Mexicanas (NOMs) and Standards – Normas Mexicanas (NMXs) by promoting greater Mexican stakeholder engagement that prioritizes the use of IEEE standards and that supports exploration of Directorate General of Standards (DGN) adoption.
“The agreement between IEEE and the Mexican Ministry of Economy is key to streamlining standards work with organizations in Mexico and helps create a welcoming environment for globally recognized technical standards that address the needs of a wide range of market sectors,” said Don Wright, IEEE SA president. “This cooperative arrangement will directly benefit consumers, as well as engineers and technologists working in Mexico by helping reduce duplication of new standards development efforts and creating an environment for technology standards to be published and used more quickly and efficiently.”
As part of its ongoing global outreach and activity program, IEEE has been increasing activity throughout the Western hemisphere and proactively engaging governing national standards organizations in order to increase awareness and demonstrate the benefit of adopting IEEE standards. The MoU between IEEE and the Ministry of Economy of the United States of Mexico establishes a framework for collaboration on standards development across a wide range of technology sectors.
“Standardization plays a key role in helping to advance technology and increasing growth and development in Mexico across such sectors as the environment, urbanization, energy, education, and healthcare,” said Daniel González Sesmas, deputy general director of standards, the Ministry of Economy of the United States of Mexico. “This agreement with IEEE is aimed at building a collaborative framework around standardization practices that will directly have a positive impact on productivity and economic growth throughout the country.”
