IEEE Approves New Standards Project IEEE P2755TM—Guide to Terms and Concepts in Intelligent Process Automation

IEEE P2755 to build industry consensus for clarity and consistency in the use of Software Based Intelligent Process Automation (SBIPA) terminology

PISCATAWAY, NEW JERSEY, USA, 22 March 2017 – IEEE, the world’s largest technical professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, and the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE SA), today announced the approval of the IEEE P2755™—Guide to Terms and Concepts in Intelligent Process Automation project. The new standards project aims to build a framework for terminology to help advance related standards efforts. Sponsored by IEEE’s Board of Governors Corporate Advisory Group, the newly formed IEEE P2755 Working Group is defining initial terminology that addresses a range of applications spaces, including Robotic Process Automation, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cognitive Computing, Autonomics, Machine Learning and related technologies that enable businesses and governments to improve performance and lower costs.

“Artificial intelligence and autonomous systems (AS) are rapidly emerging technologies that hold great promise for humanity’s future,” said Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director for IEEE SA. “lEEE is heavily involved in this space, particularly in regards to ensuring ethical alignment is prioritized as these technologies evolve. Clearly, agreed upon nomenclature is essential to standards development as it relates to ethics, interoperability, security and privacy, and just about every aspect of AI/AS, making IEEE P2755 a highly valued project added to IEEE’s agenda.”

Organizations directly involved in the new draft standard development include Ascension, Automation Anywhere, Blue Prism, ISG, KPMG LLP, Symphony Ventures and the Institute for Robotic Process Automation and Artificial Intelligence.

“With a diverse panel of industry participants coming together to formalize a path forward, IEEE P2755 can build consensus for intelligent process automation terminology that sets the stage for collaborative standards development in a number of emerging fields,” said Lee Coulter, chair, IEEE Guide to Terms and Concepts in Intelligent Process Automation Working Group. “It’s important to establish a framework now that can evolve in step with related industry developments to ensure a commonality for understanding related products, services and concepts, and to help advance the market space for the benefit of all.”
