Traffic congestion and road safety are of great concern not only in India but across the globe. Especially in India, because of road traffic congestion, undisciplined driving, road conditions, etc.; a time spent in traffic, fuel consumption, fatalities, and loss of materials encumber the growth of gross domestic product (GDP). Reports suggest that Bangalore experiences the sixth highest traffic congestion in the world. Despite huge investments in infrastructure and transportation, the condition are not improving. Furthermore, the digitalization and usage of information and communication technology (ICT) has impacted almost all sectors including transportation. Intelligent transportation system (ITS) is expected to address the issues to some extent. In fact, many cities have developed several components of ITS which have improved the situation.
Our main objective is to develop a testbed for the traffic management and control to regulate the traffic in one part of the city using 10-12 signal junction points. For example, electronic city; the industrial corridor of Bangalore will be investigated, a feasibility study will be undertaken, and a testbed will be developed. Under this objective, we will focus on traffic problems, develop a solutions approach, identify the components and systems for the solution, and create a testbed so that:
- Traffic flow is monitored, regulated, and smoothened
- Traffic situations are detected and dynamically controlled
- Traffic violations are detected
- Real time information exchange is enabled
- Green corridor creation is catalyzed
- A control station is created for unified monitoring and control
- A white paper is published to enable adoption across India and
The government supports the initiative to find a technology solution to traffic congestion. With the support of our government’s interest in finding technology solutions, we plan to bring experts together to formulate methods that can be adopted in Bangalore and beyond.
