The Convergence of Medicine and Engineering

About the Activity

The activity is motivated by the rapid growth of China’s medical technology (MedTech) sector, fueled by an industry-wide strategic push to drive innovation at the convergence of medical and engineering fields. While this ecosystem is vibrant, there remains a need for a formal, globally recognized platform to advance pre-standardization research and collaboration.

This initiative aims to bridge the “pre-standardization gap” between healthcare system and the formal process of international standards development, ultimately fostering a more stable and innovative MedTech ecosystem.

Goals of the Activity

The primary goal is to establish a neutral, technically focused interest group under the IEEE. This group will serve as a vital forum that brings together academics, industry leaders (both domestic and multinational), healthcare providers, and regulatory experts. Their collective goal is to tackle shared technical challenges and develop a consensus-driven roadmap for future standards. This roadmap will identify key areas for standardization, propose frameworks for data and device interoperability, and provide evidence-based recommendations to inform the development of future standards and smarter, science-based regulation.
