About the Activity
There is an absolute lack of personal privacy online. The digital world is full of surveillance. “Notice and consent” fails by providing no assurance at all, and cookie notice selections are routinely disregarded. Privacy policies change routinely, are not binding, and are so lengthy that they are rarely read. There is no easy way for a person to audit compliance. The January 2026 IEEE published 7012-2025 IEEE Standard for Machine Readable Personal Privacy Terms changes the paradigm by providing full personal agency in the form of contracts. Individuals, acting as first parties, can proffer their own privacy requirements as contractual terms and arrive at agreements stored and kept by both sides. This IC activity, “MyTerms”, is to support the MyTerms Alliance to move from industry standard to implementation. The MyTerms Alliance’s vision is to have a future in which MyTerms is widely adopted, continuously advanced, and trusted as a foundation for personal privacy terms.
Goals of the Activity
Our (Customer Commons, MyData Global, and the MyTerms Alliance) goal is to bridge the gap between the 7012-2025 standard and real-world adoption. The Industry Connections activity can help define and pilot practical training, develop strategic road maps, identify and implement certification programs, and document an industry white paper advancing standard awareness and understanding.
The motivation is simple: the standard has major implications across industries and consumers. We need a robust, yet agile framework for a rapid market introduction, iterated with expert feedback, ensuring broad stakeholder buy-in.
