Latest IEEE 802.11 Amendment Enhances WLAN Security

A new amendment to the IEEE 802.11™ standard will help the data communications industry address the escalating security demands placed on WLANs by providing added protection to management frames.

The standard -- IEEE 802.11w™, "Standard for Information Technology-Telecommunications and Information Exchange between Systems-Local and Metropolitan Networks-Specific Requirements-Part 11: Wireless LAN Medium Access Control (MAC) and Physical Layer (PHY) specifications: Protected Management Frames Amendment" -- is now available through the IEEE Online Store and the IEEE Xplore digital library.

IEEE 802.11w defines enhancements such as data integrity, data origin authenticity, replay protection, and data confidentiality. It can also increase the assurance of using earlier amendments -- IEEE 802.11k, IEEE 802.11n, and IEEE 802.11y -- all of which rely on increased usage of IEEE 802.11 management messages.

New IEEE Standard Defines Test Methods for Insulators in Sub-Freezing Conditions

A new IEEE standard defines test methods for insulators during sub-zero weather conditions.

The product of ten years of extensive research, IEEE 1783™, "Guide for Test Methods and Procedures to Evaluate the Electrical Performance of Insulators in Freezing Conditions," includes test methods for substation and line insulators at distribution and transmission voltage levels. The test methods detail special measures to reproduce the environmental and insulator parameters that influence the risk of flashover in freezing conditions. Statistical methods are also recommended to assist in the insulator selection process.

New Standard Covers Testing of Communications Networking Devices in Electric Power Substations

IEEE has published a new standard, IEEE 1613™, "IEEE Standard Environmental and Testing Requirements for Communications Networking Devices Installed in Electric Power Substations."

This standard defines service conditions, electrical ratings, thermal ratings, and environmental testing requirements for communications networking devices to be installed in electric power substations. It also establishes a common reproducible basis for designing and evaluating communications networking devices and the communications ports of protective relays for use in these harsh environments
