Wireless Local Area Networks Quality of Service: An Engineering Perspective

Since conception, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN), which is based on IEEE 802.11TM technologies, has seen a wide range of applications.  With the introduction of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) and other multimedia applications, WLAN users demand more than just connectivity based on best effort delivery.

A specific requirement for WLAN is to support Quality of Service (QoS) mechanisms that allow the differentiation between traffic types and the allocation of resources to application traffic that has to be delivered within a time limit or within a certain bound on the information loss.
