What
is the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA)? The Institute
of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is the
leading developer of global industry standards in a broad-range of industries,
including power and energy, information technology, telecommunications, transportation,
biomedical, and new and emerging technology, such as nanotechnology and
information assurance. For over a century, the cornerstone
of the IEEE-SA is its established standards development program — a program that
offers balance, openness, due process, and consensus. Each year, the IEEE-SA conducts
over 200 standards ballots, a process by which proposed standards are voted upon
for technical reliability and soundness. As a membership organization, IEEE-SA
thrives because of the technical diversity of its 20,000 plus participants, consisting
of technology leaders from corporations, organizations, universities, and government
agencies. Through their collective knowledge, members contribute to the integrity
and value of IEEE standards. For more information, go to: http://standards.ieee.org/announcements/bkgnd_sa.html.
Why
join the IEEE-SA? Through its membership,
the IEEE-SA provides a standards program that serves the global needs of industry,
government and the public. The members of the IEEE-SA represent technological
innovation, global participation and dedication to the on-going advancement and
promotion of new concepts. Because of its strong membership, the IEEE-SA continues
to be proactive in meeting industry needs, as well as responsive to global standards
issues. Membership in the IEEE-SA connects you
with a vast network of your counterparts from leading world organizations, giving
you access to a wide range of technical areas where you can make contacts, gather
information, and build consensus on technical needs to create next generation
standards. IEEE-SA provides you with focused connections for your industry standards
concerns, activities and actions, and provides a full range of standards services
to help you get your standards development job done. As
a member, you can tap into the expertise of the thousands of professionals participating
in the standards development process. You are also empowered with governance over
the future direction of IEEE Standards Association, with access to the IEEE-SA
Board of Governors - the strategic arm of the IEEE-SA, and to the IEEE-SA Standards
Board, the standards development process oversight board. Become
a member of the IEEE standards community, and open the door to a dynamic forum
where innovators from a broad range of technical disciplines exchange ideas and
share first hand knowledge with you. For more information, go to: http://standards.ieee.org/sa/index.html.
What
is the difference between IEEE and IEEE-SA membership? The
IEEE (The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc.)
advances markets by promoting the engineering process, fostering technological
innovation and enabling members' careers worldwide. For more information, go to:
http://www.ieee.org/portal/site. The IEEE-SA (IEEE Standards Association)
is the standards development activity of the IEEE, where industry leaders formulate
and promote internationally recognized standards, shaping the direction of technology.
SA Membership enables you to have direct influence on the outcome of standards
projects through balloting privileges and ongoing participation. For more information,
go to: http://standards.ieee.org/sa/index.html.
As an IEEE and IEEE-SA
member, can I have access to all IEEE Standards? IEEE
and IEEE-SA membership does not give you access to all IEEE Standards. Members
receive a discount on the purchase of standards and standards subscriptions. IEEE
and IEEE-SA provide the facilities, staff, and resources to develop standards.
The price of the standard you are interested in pays for intellectual property
as well as the time and resources contributed to the standard's development, much
the same as you would pay for the rights to develop projects using published copyrighted
novels, or published copyrighted music, etc. Please
note that membership does not include access to standards drafts. You must query
the working group chair directly for permission to view their drafts, and the
working group will make the decision.
Who is eligible for IEEE-SA
membership? Individuals, including
IEEE members of any grade, IEEE Society affiliates, or non-IEEE members who are
actively involved in standards development are eligible for IEEE-SA Individual
membership. Corporations, government agencies,
trade associations, user groups, universities, and other standards developing
organizations that want to actively participate in standards development are eligible
for IEEE-SA Corporate membership. Active standards
development includes participation in a standards working group, membership in
a standards balloting group, or involvement in other standards developing organizations.
What
are the dues for IEEE-SA Corporate Membership? IEEE-SA
Corporate Membership Annual Dues (Based on annual revenue USD) Corporations:
Less than US $1 million - Dues are US $1000 US$1 million to US $1 billion

Do I have to be a member
to participate in a working group? No,
but you do have to be a member to ballot on standards, or a per-ballot fee is
required. Unlimited balloting means savings for you as an IEEE-SA member. Comment
and ballot on as many standards projects as you wish by accepting invitations
to ballot on standards that impact your industry or company. A web-based balloting
sign-on sheet allows you to select an unlimited number of balloting pools that
you wish to participate in at no additional charge. Most
IEEE-SA individual members ballot on two to three standards project per year.
Without IEEE-SA membership status, you would pay US $275 per ballot. As an IEEE-SA
member, you can ballot on as many projects as you want for only US $38 (as an
IEEE or IEEE Society member) or US $203 (if you don't belong to the IEEE and/or
any of its technical societies). For corporate
members, the same unlimited balloting benefit also applies: Corporate members
can ballot on as many "entity only" standards as they wish.
Per
ballot fees for Corporations/Organizations: Individual - $275 Corporations
with less than US $1 million in annual revenue - $1200 Corporations with between
US $1 million and $1 billion in annual revenue - $3600 Corporations with over
US $1 billion in annual revenue - $6000 Academic Institutions - $1200
Government entities - $6000 Standards Development Organizations (SDOs) - $1200
Trade Organizations - $1200
Do I have to be an IEEE-SA
member to ballot on the developing standard? Yes.
As an IEEE-SA member, you have the opportunity to ballot on an unlimited number
of developing standards. If you prefer not to join the IEEE-SA standards development
community, then you pay a per-ballot fee for each draft that you wish to ballot
on.
How can I be sure that
I will be included in the ballots that I am interested in? Important
things to remember about myBallot™ 1. If you haven’t done so already,
you must re-enroll yourself in Invitation Pools. Your information from the old
balloting system did not carry over into myBallot, our new web-based balloting
system. 2. To access myBallot, including re-enrollment in or join new Invitation
Pools, you will need an IEEE Web Account. An IEEE Web Account will provide you
with a user name and password that will be used to enter the myBallot system.
3.
Once enrolled in Invitation Pools, you will continue to receive invitations to
ballot, via email alerts, that will notify you when Ballot Groups are being formed.
If you wish to join the Ballot Group, you just log-on to myBallot at https://balloting.standards.ieee.org/my-site
and enroll yourself in the balloting group. 4. With myBallot, you don’t have
to wait to receive an invitation to participate in balloting. Log onto myBallot
at https://balloting.standards.ieee.org/my-site
often to see what ballot groups are being formed and enroll in the groups
that interest you.
Can Individual Members
and Corporate Members ballot on the same standards projects? Yes.
Both individuals and corporations have the opportunity to ballot on the same project
in a "mixed" or "joint" ballot.Responding
to the needs of our diverse industry sectors, IEEE hosts a broad range of standards
programs rather than a "one size fits all" policy. An IEEE committee
can declare at the outset of its project that it will proceed as either: (1)
an individual-based ballot (2) a corporate-level ballot (3) a ballot
that includes company representatives and individuals, i.e., a "mixed"
or "joint ballot."
Please note: If choosing
to become an IEEE-SA individual member to save money on balloting, please allow
15-20 business days to have your membership processed.
Do IEEE-SA Individual
& Corporate Members receive discounts on standards products? Yes, you are eligible for the same member discounts on
standards products as an IEEE member or IEEE society affiliate. To purchase single
standards online, go to the IEEE Online Catalog and Store at URL
http://shop.ieee.org/ieeestore/. To purchase multi-user standards subscriptions
for your company or R&D department, go to the http://standards.ieee.org/catalog/olis/index.html.
Member discounts are listed with regular pricing in the catalogs. Please note
that corporate membership does not include access to standards drafts. You must
query the working group directly for permission to view their drafts, and the
working group will make the decision.
