A standard has a validity period of five years from the
date of approval by the IEEE-SA Standards Board. Before that
validity period expires, the sponsor must initiate the Reaffirmation
process. This process affirms that the technical content of
the standard is still valid and the document is reaffirmed
for another five-year period.
During this five year validity period, amendments
and corrigenda may need to be developed that offer minor
revisions to the standard.
If there is a need to update the standard or any of its published
amendments or corrigenda the sponsor may consider the revision
process.
It is important to note that at the end of the five year
validity period, one of three things has to happen: revision,
reaffirmation, or withdrawal.
