SCC32 on ITS Tackles Message-Set-Protocol for Electronic Toll Collection

The Protocols and Message Sets Subcommittee of SCC32 (Standards Coordinating Committee on IVHS)--recently changed to ITS, Intelligent Transportation Systems--is recruiting people interested in writing a standard set of messages and associated protocols for electronic toll collection and electronic clearance processes for commercial vehicle operations. Since electronic toll collection requires communication between a fixed toll station and vehicles traveling at speeds of up to 70 miles per hour, the message-set-protocol combination must be designed for maximum transfer of information in a given length of time at a given frequency, the latter to be established by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).

A users group has recently completed a report on the messages needed, and a melding of these requirements with the transmission capabilities is needed. Volunteers interested in working these problems into standards should communicate with SCC32 Chair John E. May, telephone or fax (508) 887-5237.
