Via Licensing
Via Licensing helps bridge patent licensing and multi-party IP programs with the commercial requirements of product developers and content providers.
Via's expertise enables the creation of one-stop-shop licensing programs tailored to the unique demands and requirements of essential IP holders and their intended markets with services that include:
• Working with technical experts and patent evaluators
• Facilitating discussions among patent holders
• Developing commercialization and licensing agreements
• Promoting and operating licensing programs
• Developing strategic business relationships
Via Licensing will work with IEEE to identify technologies standardized by IEEE that may benefit from the creation of patent pools.
How will this benefit patent licensors and licensees?
In support of this collaboration, IEEE-SA will place additional focus on building awareness of the value of patent pools within Via's stakeholder groups.
Via and IEEE will also help build awareness for patent pools among technology stakeholders and will bring its experience in managing patent pools and subscribing new licensees to help ensure the success of pools that are created.
Why is pooling appealing when it comes to standards?
Today’s products rely upon a complex collection of technologies, IP rights and standards. Without patent pools, both licensees and licensors would need to negotiate and manage multiple individual licenses before a new technology can be implemented.
Patent pools provide pro-competitive, cost-effective access to the essential patents embodied in the core of many standardized technologies. Patent pools comprise the essential patents necessary to implement these technologies in products.
Patent pools reduce the potential for infringement of essential patents owned by the licensors in the pool. A patent pool can therefore reduce many of the costs associated with implementing a technology, and may ultimately reduce the cost of standards-based products.
Is this collaboration targeted at specific markets or technologies?
IEEE-SA and Via Licensing have not limited the focus of the collaboration to specific sectors, and will identify candidate technologies and accelerate discussions that could lead to the formation of patent pools.
