India, 9 January 2012 – IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), a globally recognized standards setting body within IEEE that has been playing an increased role in Smart Grid Awareness and implementation in India over the last year, today reiterated its commitment to the growing Indian Smart Grid market and announced that it will be an active participant and the Gold sponsor of India’s first ‘GridWeek Asia’. An extension of the annual GridWeek Conference held in Washington D.C, USA, the inaugural GridWeek Asia in India organized by IEEMA (Indian Electrical and Electronics Manufacturers Association) and Clasma Events, is positioned to be the most influential gathering of Smart Grid players, regulators and other key stakeholders in Asia. The summit will be held at the Grand Hyatt in Mumbai from January 16-18, 2012.
With more than 100 Smart Grid Standards being developed, IEEE-SA’s participation and sponsorship of GridWeek Asia follows the resounding success achieved by the organization and it’s India SIG (Standards Interest Group) in 2011 in increasing Smart Grid awareness and facilitating faster progress towards implementation in the country. IEEE-SA conducted a series of Smart Grid workshops in the last year, besides introduction of some of the most important Smart Grid standards such as the IEEE 2030™ for interoperability, IEEE 1701™ and IEEE 1702™ advanced Smart Metering standards, IEEE 1902™ for Broadband over Power Line, and IEEE 1547™ guideline for deployment of Micro Grids.
Commenting on the participation at the event, William Ash - Strategic Program Manager, IEEE Standards Association of IEEE-SA said, "There are undoubtedly huge potential for energy efficiency and the deployment of Smart Grids in India. India requires 1,00,000 MW of additional generation capacity in the next six years and 2500 MW of renewable power will be added to the grid annually. Our participation at GridWeek Asia reaffirms our commitment to work hand in hand with the Indian Government, industry and regulatory bodies to develop and introduce standards that will facilitate better and faster implementation."
"We are keen to share our knowledge and experience in the Smart Grid space and believe that a global and premier event such as the GridWeek Asia, being held for the first time in the country is an important platform for us to do so and meet key stakeholders whom we could partner with in enhancing our efforts further", added Srikanth Chandrasekaran, Chairperson of IEEE-SA India SIG and the Smart Grid Workgroup in India IEEE-SA.
