IEEE Representation on IEC - U.S. National Committee
The IEEE is a member of the U.S.
National Committee of the International Electrotechnical Commission
(USNC/IEC). The USNC serves as the focal point for U.S. parties
who are interested in the development, promulgation, and use of
globally-relevant standards for the electrotechnical industry. The
Committee is also engaged in the assessment of conformance to standards,
undertaking work in areas such as testing, certification, and accreditation.
As the United States representative to the IEC and many related regional standardization bodies, the USNC/IEC serves as a conduit to the global standards-setting community for technical and policy positions arising in the U.S. and brings issues from the global arena to the U.S. for review, consideration, and response.
For more information about IEEE's participation
on the USNC, contact the International
Program Office.

IEC Procedures
There are three core documents describing basic procedural rules to be followed by IEC committees:
- ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 (Procedures for the technical work) (2004, 5th ed.) (PDF format) - This part sets out the procedures to be followed within ISO and IEC in carrying out their technical work: primarily the development and maintenance of International Standards through the activities of technical committees and their subsidiary bodies.
- ISO/IEC
Directives, Part 2, Rules for the structure and drafting of International
Standards (2004, 5th edition) (PDF format) - This part specifies
rules for the structure and drafting of documents intended to
become International Standards, Technical Specifications or Publicly
Available Specifications. As far as practical, these rules also
apply to documents intended to become Technical Reports or Guides.
All these document types are referred to collectively hereinafter
as documents, unless otherwise necessary.
- ISO/IEC
Directives, IEC Supplement:2004, Procedures specific to IEC (PDF
format) - This PDF format Supplement to the ISO/IEC Directives
comprises modifications and additions to the ISO/IEC Directives
that have been approved by the Standardization Management Board
for implementation within IEC. Reference is also made to the list
of additional documentation provided on the IEC web site.
