What does the IEEE Standards Department do?
The staff of IEEE Standards serves the IEEE-SA Board of Governors, the IEEE-SA Standards Board and standards-developing groups; oversees the development and publication of IEEE standards, standards of certain Accredited Standards Committees, and related products; and promotes the use of IEEE standards around the world.
How many people are on the Standards staff?
The staff currently includes about 50 full-time workers.
How does the staff assist standards developers in their work?
Staff Liaisons are assigned to standards groups to guide them through the process of developing a standard. They can attend meetings and provide current information on policies and procedures. The IEEE-SA Standards Board support staff members oversee the process of submitting project authorization requests (PARs) and completed standards for approval. Staff also provide a standards balloting service, along with marketing and promotional services. IEEE Standards Project Editors review drafts of developing standards, work with standards developers to ensure that drafts are proceeding on the right track, and also prepare the finished documents for publication. The IEEE Standards Electronic Services staff create tools for on-line standards development and dissemination.
Can I get a standards staff member to come to one of my standards committee's meetings?
Staff members frequently travel to meetings to provide training and guidance to working groups. Contact your staff liaison or project editor to discuss your needs.
How do I find out which Staff Liaison is assigned to my group?
There is a list of standards committees and the Staff Liaison assigned to each.
What specific services does my Staff Liaison provide to my group?
Staff Liaisons can attend one or more of your meetings and provide leadership training or training on specified topics, as requested. They are here to provide guidance to working groups as issues arise on matters such as changing the scope of a standard, dealing with copyright or patent issues, and achieving consensus. Staff Engineers can also provide electronic files of standards for revision.
A great deal of information is available at the IEEE Standards website: the IEEE Standards Association Operations Manual, IEEE-SA Standards Board Operations Manual, the IEEE Standards Style Manual, the IEEE-SA Standards Board Bylaws, the IEEE Standards Companion, and the forms for submitting a PAR and finished standard.
Are Project Editors assigned to working groups?
Project Editors are typically assigned to fairly broad areas, not to specific projects. However, Project Editors work on standards in closely related fields (for instance, one editor works on most of the switchgear standards, another on microprocessor bus structures). You may contact Yvette Ho Sang to request help from a Project Editor.
