What
is the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA)? The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is a leading developer of global industry standards in a broad-range of industries, including:
• Power and energy
• Information technology
• Telecommunications
• Transportation
• Medical and healthcare
• New and emerging technology, such as nanotechnology and information assurance
The IEEE-SA standards development program offers balance, openness, due process, and consensus. Each year, the IEEE-SA conducts over 200 standards ballots, a process by which proposed standards are voted upon for technical reliability and soundness.
As a membership organization, IEEE-SA thrives because of the technical diversity of its 20,000 plus participants, consisting of technology leaders from corporations, organizations, universities, and government agencies. Through their collective knowledge, members contribute to the integrity and value of IEEE standards.
Why
join the IEEE-SA? The IEEE-SA standards program produces standards which meet the global needs of industry, government and the public for a broad range of technologies and industries. This program has been delivering highly valued standards for over a century resulting in an active portfolio of nearly 1,300 standards with many more projects currently under development.
IEEE-SA members are the driving force behind these standards with their:
• technical expertise and innovation;
• global participation;
• dedication to the ongoing advancement and promotion of new concepts; and
• the diversity of the thousands of participants.
Membership in the IEEE-SA enables you to contribute to and influence this important work while connecting you with a network of industry experts from a wide range of technical areas. Visit the IEEE-SA Membership area for more information.
What is the difference between IEEE and IEEE-SA
membership? IEEE is the world's largest technical society, bringing members access to the industry's most essential technical information, networking opportunities, career development tools, and many other exclusive benefits. Among the many benefits are a personal subscription to IEEE Spectrum and The Institute, substantial discounts on IEEE magazines, journals, books, videos, and conferences. Visit the IEEE Membership area for more information.
The IEEE-SA (IEEE Standards Association) is an activity area of IEEE focused on the development of internationally recognized standards. Membership enables you to have direct influence on the outcome of standards projects through balloting privileges and ongoing involvement and participation. Visit the IEEE-SA Membership area for more information.
As
an IEEE and IEEE-SA member, can I have access to all
IEEE Standards? IEEE and IEEE-SA membership does not give you access to all IEEE Standards. Members receive a discount on the purchase of standards. IEEE and IEEE-SA contribute facilities, staff, and resources to participant interested in developing standards. The price of the standard you are interested in is payment for intellectual property as well as the time and resources contributed to the facilitation of the standard's development, much the same as you would pay for the rights to develop projects using published copyrighted novels, or published copyrighted music, etc.
Please note that membership does not include access to standards drafts. You must query the working group directly for permission to view their drafts, and the working group will make the decision. Visit the IEEE-SA Membership area for more information.
Who is eligible for IEEE-SA membership?
Individuals, including IEEE members of any grade, IEEE Society affiliates, or non-IEEE members who are actively involved in standards development are eligible for IEEE-SA Individual membership.
Corporations, government agencies, trade associations, user groups, universities, and other standards developing organizations that want to actively participate in standards development are eligible for IEEE-SA Corporate membership.
Active standards development includes, for example, participation in a standards working group, membership in a standards balloting group, or involvement in other standards developing organizations. Visit the IEEE-SA Membership area for more information.
With Advanced Corporate Membership you can participate in any corporate working group. Participation includes the ability to:
- Make proposals and technical contributions
- Be part of a proposal team
- Speak on motions
- Receive IEEE-SA project support to bring corporate standards to successful conclusion
Upon gaining voting rights in the working group (usually by attending a speciic number of meetings) you have the abilitiy to:
- Make motions and vote in any working group meeting
- Nominate and elect working group officers
- Serve as working group officers
Nonmembers may attend one corporate standards working group meeting to determine their interest in the project.
Do
I have to be a member to ballot on the developing
standard? As an IEEE-SA member, you have the opportunity to ballot on an unlimited number of developing standards. If you prefer not to join the IEEE-SA standards development community, then you pay a per-ballot fee. Contact myballot@ieee.org for more information.
How
can I be sure that I will be included in the ballots
that I am interested in? Complete the Invitation Pool form after you submit the IEEE-SA membership application and have received your member number from us. Select all the invitation pools that you are interested in. Once a standards project is ready to form a balloting group, you will be sent an invitation to ballot. At that time, you can decide whether you wish to ballot on that project or not. Ballots that are already in progress cannot add additional balloters. Contact myballot@ieee.org for more information.
Do
IEEE-SA Individual members receive discounts on standards
products? Yes, you are eligible for the same member discounts on standards products as an IEEE member or IEEE society affiliate. Member discounts are listed with regular pricing in the catalogs. Please note that corporate membership does not include access to standards drafts. You must query the working group directly for permission to view their drafts, and the working group will make the decision.
Do
I have to be a Corporate member to purchase an Organizationally
Unique Identifier (OUI) or the IEEE Standards Online
Subscriptions? No, it is not necessary to become a Corporate member to purchase an OUI or IEEE Standards Online Subscriptions. See OUI Frequently Asked Questions for more information on OUIs and IEEE Standards Online subscriptions
What
IEEE-SA governance can I vote for in the annual election? IEEE-SA Individual members who also are voting members of the IEEE may vote for the IEEE-SA President, IEEE-SA President-Elect and for the eight IEEE-SA Board of Governors Members-at-Large.
IEEE-SA Individual members who are not voting members of the IEEE may vote for the eight IEEE-SA Board of Governors Members-at-Large.
IEEE-SA Corporate members may vote for the eight IEEE-SA Board of Governors Members-at-Large.
Can
I renew my IEEE-SA membership along with my IEEE and/or
IEEE society membership? Yes. Every August and September, you may have trouble in changing your membership configuration or accessing certain areas of the web. This occurs because IEEE is readying itself for the following year's membership renewal. Contact Member Services via phone and email to address any problems you may be experiencing.

I'm
an IEEE Life Member. Do I have to pay dues to join
the IEEE-SA? At the present time, the dues for IEEE Life Members are the same as those for IEEE Members of any other grade--US $43. Once IEEE Life Members pay IEEE-SA dues for five years, they do not have to pay IEEE-SA dues any longer.
How
do I change my contact information such as mailing
or email address?
The best way to update or change your membership information is to go to the IEEE "Manage Your Membership" web area and change your information electronically.
IEEE and IEEE-SA will from time to time send you important information about new programming in IEEE standards development in order for you to maximize the value of your membership.
If you are experiencing problems with solicitation, please contact Member Services at +1 800 678 IEEE (4333) in the US and Canada (+1 732 981 0060 worldwide), or send an email to member-services@ieee.org.
