What is the IEEE Dictionary?

The IEEE Dictionary, as it is commonly known, is really IEEE 100, The Authoritative Dictionary of IEEE Standards Terms, Seventh Edition. IEEE 100 is a product of the IEEE Standards Information Network (SIN).

IEEE 100 provides definitions for over 35 000 technical terms from every field of electrical, electronics, and computer engineering used throughout industry today. IEEE 100 also includes abstracts of IEEE standards.

IEEE 100 compiles terms and definitions from over 800 IEEE standards. This means that the terms and definitions have been created by actual working groups that are developing standards in particular areas. As such, the terms and definitions undergo extensive peer review, coordination with other related fields, and consensus broad-based balloting before they are accepted into practice as standard terminology.

Who prepares the IEEE Dictionary?

The IEEE Dictionary is published by the IEEE Standards Information Network (SIN). The preparation of its content is overseen by IEEE Standards Project Editors.

What's in the IEEE Dictionary?

  • Over 35 000 technical terms and definitions from every field of electrical, electronics, and computer engineering
  • An extensive, convenient acronym and abbreviation section
  • A complete set of abstracts describing IEEE standards
  • Equations and formulas in easy-to-read type

How current is the information in the Dictionary?

The 2000 edition of IEEE 100 contains definitions from standards approved through June 2000.

Can I get a term and/or definition added into the IEEE Dictionary?

Only terms and definitions from approved IEEE standards are added to IEEE 100. In the earlier years of IEEE Std 100, terms from other sources were added. However, since 1992, only terms from approved IEEE standards are being added.

How often is the IEEE Dictionary published?
