The Human Standard: Why Ethical Considerations Should Drive Technological Design Webinar

In the age of autonomous and intelligent machines, it is more important than ever to help technologists and organizations be cognizant of the ethical implications of the products, services or systems they are building and how they are being built before making them available to the general public. While established Codes of Ethics provide instrumental guidance for employee behavior, new values-centric methodologies are needed to complement these codes to address the growing use of algorithms and personalization in the marketplace.

Key insights from the Working Group Chairs of three IEEE-SA projects will be presented. The IEEE Global Initiative provided the input and recommendations that led to the creation of Working Groups for these IEEE-SA standards projects:
IEEE P7001™: Transparency of Autonomous Systems
IEEE P7003™: Algorithmic Bias Considerations

Speakers will provide their perspectives on why it is important for business leaders to increase due diligence relative to ethical considerations for what they create. This focus is not just about avoiding unintended consequences, but also increasing innovation by better aligning with customer and end-user values.

Kay Firth-Butterfield Kay Firth-Butterfield: Executive Committee Vice-Chair, The IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems, Executive Director, AI Austin

Firth-Butterfield is a Barrister and part-time Judge who has worked as a mediator, arbitrator, business owner and professor in the United Kingdom. In the United States, she is the Executive Director and Founding Advocate of AI-Austin which is a globally focused non-profit dedicated to the responsible design, development and use of AI and the socially beneficial use of AI in the community, specifically in Healthcare, Education and ethical governance of AI. She is the former Chief Officer of the Lucid.ai Ethics Advisory Panel.

Kay is a Senior Fellow and Distinguished Scholar at the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law, University of Texas, Austin and Vice-Chair, The IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems Additionally, she is a Partner in the Cognitive Finance group and an adjunct Professor of Law. Kay is a humanitarian with a strong sense of social justice and has advanced degrees in Law and International Relations. She advises governments, think tanks, businesses, inter-governmental bodies and non-profits about artificial intelligence, law and policy. Kay co-founded the Consortium for Law and Policy of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at the University of Texas and taught its first course: Artificial Intelligence and Emerging Technologies: Law and Policy. She thinks about and works on how AI and other technologies will impact society and business. Kay regularly speaks to international audiences addressing many aspects of these challenging changes. John C. Havens John C. Havens: Executive Director, The IEEE Global Initiative for Ethical Considerations in Artificial Intelligence and Autonomous Systems

John C. Havens is a regular contributor on issues of technology and wellbeing to Mashable, The Guardian, HuffPo and TechCrunch and is author of Heartificial Intelligence: Embracing Our Humanity To Maximize Machines and Hacking Happiness: Why Your Personal Data Counts and How Tracking it Can Change the World. John was an EVP of a Top Ten PR Firm, a VP of a tech startup, and an independent consultant where he has worked with clients such as Gillette, P&G, HP, Wal-Mart, Ford, Allstate, Monster, Gallo Wines, and Merck. He is also the Founder of The Happathon Project, a non-profit utilizing emerging technology and positive psychology to increase human wellbeing. John has spoken at TEDx, at SXSW Interactive (six times), and as a global keynote speaker for clients like Cisco, Gillette, IEEE, and NXP Semiconductors. John was also a professional actor on Broadway, TV and Film for fifteen years.


Ansgar Koene Ansgar Koene: Senior Research Fellow at Horizon Digital Economy Research institute, University of Nottingham. Co-Investigator on the UnBias project and Policy Impact lead for Horizon.

Ansgar Koene is a Senior Research Fellow and Co-Investigator on the UnBias project at Horizon Digital Economy Research (University of Nottingham). Prior to UnBias he worked on the CaSMa project. He has a multi-disciplinary research background, having worked and published on topics ranging from bio-inspired Robotics, AI and Computational Neuroscience to experimental Human Behaviour/Perception studies. Prior to joining Horizon, Ansgar worked at the University of Utrecht (Utrecht, the Netherlands), INSERM (Lyon, France), UCL (London, UK), ATR (Kyoto, Japan), NTU (Taipei, Taiwan), University of Sheffield (Sheffield, UK), RIKEN BSI (Tokyo, Japan) and University of Birmingham (Birmingham, UK).

As part of UnBias, Ansgar is focusing on stakeholder engagement for the development of policy recommendations. In addition to his work on UnBias and the CaSMa research theme, Ansgar also actively engages with the Horizon Policy Impact agenda which seeks to support local, national and international policy initiatives with the knowledge and expertise of the Horizon Digital Economy Research institute.


Konstantinos Karachilios Konstantinos Karachilios: Managing Director, IEEE Standards Association

A globally recognized leader in standards development and intellectual property, Dr. Ing. Konstantinos Karachalios is managing director of the IEEE Standards Association and a member of the IEEE Management Council.

As managing director, he has been enhancing IEEE efforts in global standards development in strategic emerging technology fields, through technical excellence of staff, expansion of global presence and activities and emphasis on inclusiveness and good governance, including reform of the IEEE standards-related patent policy.

As member of the IEEE Management Council, he championed expansion of IEEE influence in key techno-political areas, including consideration of social and ethical implications of technology, according to the IEEE mission to advance technology for humanity. Results have been rapid in coming and profound; IEEE is becoming the place to go for debating and building consensus on issues such as a trustworthy and inclusive Internet and ethics in design of autonomous systems.

Before IEEE, Konstantinos played a crucial role in successful French-German cooperation in coordinated research and scenario simulation for large-scale nuclear reactor accidents. And with the European Patent Office, his experience included establishing EPO’s patent academy, the department for delivering technical assistance for developing countries and the public policy department, serving as an envoy to multiple U.N. organizations.

Konstantinos earned a Ph.D. in energy engineering (nuclear reactor safety) and masters in mechanical engineering from the University of Stuttgart.


Alan Winfield Alan Winfield: Professor, Bristol Robotics Laboratory, University of the West of England; Visiting Professor, University of York

Alan Winfield is Professor of Robot Ethics at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, UK, and Visiting Professor at the University of York. He received his PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Hull in 1984, then co-founded and led APD Communications Ltd until taking-up appointment at UWE, Bristol in 1992. Alan co-founded the Bristol Robotics Laboratory where his research is focused on cognitive robotics; he is especially interested in robots as working models of life, evolution, intelligence and culture.

Alan is an advocate for robot ethics; he was a member of the British Standards Institute working group that drafted BS 8611: Guide to the Ethical Design of Robots and Robotic Systems, and he currently co-chairs the General Principles committee of the IEEE Global Initiative on Ethical Considerations in the Design of Autonomous Systems. Alan has published over 200 works, including ‘Robotics: A Very Short Introduction’ (Oxford University Press, 2012); he lectures widely on robotics, presenting to both academic and public audiences, and blogs at http://alanwinfield.blogspot.com/.
