Single phase induction motors constitute a large proportion of the installed base of electric motors in industry. These motors are manufactured and sold in large quantities and their energy efficiency performance is of significant interest not only to manufacturers and users but also to government regulators. The US Department of Energy recently published rules for minimum energy performance of small motors. The P-114 working group is working on a test standard that would provide the key guidelines in determining the efficiency of single phase machines in an accurate manner.
