1901.1 - Standard for Medium Frequency (less than 15 MHz) Power Line Communications for Smart Grid Applications

This standard specifies the technologies of the electricity information collection system for electrical customers based on broadband power line carrier communication network. This standard supports indoor and outdoor communications over low-voltage power lines in a frequency band of 2 MHz to 12 MHz, with a scalable date rate depending on the application requirements and network conditions. This standard applies to the data exchanges between concentrators, electrical meters, and collectors of the electricity information collection system. The standard assures coexistence with other broadband and narrowband power line devices. This standard addresses the necessary security requirements that assure communication privacy and allow use for security-sensitive services. This standard defines the physical layer (PHY), the medium access control (MAC) sublayer and the network management sublayer of the data link layer, as defined by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) open systems interconnection (OSI) basic reference model as shown in 3.4.
