Open Data

A collaboration to develop open data processes and applications to enable organizations and institutions in creating significant business opportunities by making data easily accessible and traceable.

ABOUT

Open Data is data that can be freely used, re-used, and redistributed by anyone–subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and share alike. While publicly available government data sets may be an initial focus, this initiative will not be confined to public institutions, as private institutions are frequently required (and are well-served) through the regular reporting of non-proprietary material data. Additionally, the focus will include non-personal data (i.e., data which does not contain information about specific individuals) and data not subject to national security restrictions. Lastly, participants in this activity will work toward fully-open data sets, with no discrimination against fields of endeavor or against persons or groups. For example, ‘non-commercial’ restrictions that would prevent ‘commercial’ use, or restrictions of use for certain purposes (e.g. only in education), will not be permitted.

The core participants piloting this effort are focused in South Africa with initial work efforts and use cases centered around open data sources via local Cape Town government. It is envisioned that outcomes of these pilot activities can be leveraged as a basis for future African and broader global initiatives in open data.

INITIAL FOCUS OF THIS ACTIVITY WILL PLAN TO INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING OPEN DATA OUTCOMES:

  • Identification of value add information
  • Centralization of existing open data sets in an accessible manner
  • Open Source Pilot: development of tools and analytical engine to view the data in standardized method
  • Creation of a sustainable mechanism to enable open data maintenance and management
  • Development of supporting documentation and training
  • Facilitate training of youth in Open Data (maintenance, management)

FUTURE ACTIVITIES ENVISIONED MAY INCLUDE:

  • Open APIs
  • Open Algorithms
  • Open Learning
  • Community Engagement

HOW TO PARTICIPATE

We invite a diverse set of participants with an initial focus on participants from South Africa, local governments and institutions to discuss their challenges and needs with regard to managing their data.
