Hundreds Attend First CAG Seminar in Japan

More than 250 people attended "Global Standards: Local Benefits," a one-day seminar organized by the IEEE-SA Corporate Activity Group (CAG). It was held on Wednesday, 14 May, at the global headquarters of Sony Corporation in Tokyo. The event attracted engineers and executives from the city and surrounding areas.

"We were overdue in doing an event in Japan," said CAG member James Williamson of Sony. "It went flawlessly."

The seminar opened with a welcome keynote from Sony's Keiji Kimura, EVP, Corporate Executive Officer, Officer in Charge of Technology Strategies, Intellectual Property and Electronics Business Strategies, Sony Corporation. This was followed by presentations from the Japan Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI).

Later, Dr. W. Charlton Adams, Jr., President-Elect of IEEE-SA, provided an introduction to IEEE-SA, while Steven M. Mills, Chair of the CAG, followed with a look at IEEE-SA's IPR policy. CAG members Dr. Bilel Jamoussi and Dennis B. Brophy discussed the IEEE-SA Corporate Program and provided examples of the IEEE-SA entity standards development process.
The seminar also included a full afternoon of technical sessions, including presentations on battery standards, power line communications, cognitive radio standards, WiMAX and other topics.

"It was a very good event," said Brophy, who also serves as vice-chair of the IEEE-SA CAG. "I think it was a great introduction to the Standards Association for the Japanese community, and a chance for us to share the advancements we're making in the standards process at IEEE by developing the Corporate Program. We've had success with specific projects that the Japanese companies and community have participated in and demonstrated how the corporate program can be used to create market-driven and market-relevant standards."

The seminar was followed by a series of nine outreach meetings to Japanese ministries, associations and trade organizations. They included the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA), Information Technology Standards Commission of Japan, and Nippon Keidanren, as well as the MIC and METI ministries.

"It was a pleasure to meet with everyone at our outreaches," said Brophy. "We were impressed by the openness and candor with everyone we met with, and we look forward to ongoing discussions on how we can forge the development of more standards with the Japanese community."

"I think it was a very productive trip for IEEE," said Williamson, "in that Japan is a developed country with a lot of companies. It's tailor-made for the Corporate Program. We plan to further solidify the overtures that were made over there and improve the membership of the Corporate Program."

IEEE Signs MOUs with Israeli & South African Standards Bureaus

IEEE-SA has signed memoranda of understanding with two national standards boards, the Standards Institution of Israel (SII) and the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS). The MOUs encourage IEEE-SA and the two organizations to share knowledge of each group's standards development activities and avoid technical duplication whenever possible.

"This agreement will allow us to use the IEEE-SA brand to strengthen the Israel national standards system," said Doran Tamir, SII Director General. The focus of the SII MOU is to link specific Israeli industry leaders, stakeholders and technical experts with IEEE’s technical standards committees to drive increased participation and knowledge sharing, as well as to promote the relevance of IEEE standards to Israeli regulatory needs.

"Our agreement will promote greater South African involvement in the IEEE standards development process," said Dr. G.R. Visser, Standards Executive, SABS, "and promote our nation's acceptance and use of IEEE standards."

"These new relationships will help to continue the international usage of vital IEEE standards and enhance interoperability of devices using these standards," said Terry deCourcelle, IEEE-SA Director, International Standards Programs. The MOUs are each effective for two years.
