What
are IEEE standards?
Published documents that set specifications and procedures designed
to ensure materials, products, methods or services are fit for
their purpose and consistently perform the way they were intended.
IEEE standards establish an authoritative "common language" that
defines quality and sets technical criteria. They are the common
denominator that organize our technical world, ensure safety,
facilitate trade, add value to products and help drive market
developments.
What
is standardization?
The process by which a standard is developed.
In order to
ensure that every IEEE standard is credible, has support of all
interested parties and is developed in an open manner, the standards
development process is clearly defined. Key criteria of a standard
includes that the standard represents the consensus of technical
experts and that these experts contribute their knowledge and
time to the development of the standard.
The standards
development process has several key milestones:
-Request,
usually from an industry body or group of individuals, for a
standard project
-Project approval by the IEEE-SA Standards Board
-Formation of a Working Group to write the standard and develop
a draft document
-Public comment on the draft
-Consideration of comments
-Final standards approval by the IEEE-SA Standards Board
-Publication of the standard
