PISCATAWAY,
N.J., USA, 1 March 2004 The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA)
has issued a brochure that reviews two handbooks developed to
supplement the IEEE's recently published high-rate and low-rate
personal area network (PAN) standards, IEEE 802.15.3 and
IEEE 802.15.4. The handbooks are part of the IEEE Standards
Wireless Network Series.
One of the
handbooks, "Wireless Multimedia: A Guide to the IEEE 802.15.3
Standard," addresses the untapped market for devices that
comply with this high-rate PAN standard. The volume explores potential
applications for the standard, including wireless keyboards, printers,
digital cameras, cordless phones and other business and consumer
devices. It also reviews the standard, presents implementation
examples, and the rationale behind the standard.
The other
handbook, "Low-Rate Wireless Personal Area Networks: Enabling
Wireless Sensors with IEEE 802.15.4?," provides an in-depth
understanding of this standard for low-cost, low-power wireless
connectivity and it possibilities. It includes network layer functionality
not included in the standard, as well as implementation and system
design. Markets likely to be affected by the standard include
consumer electronics, personal healthcare, toys, games, and home
automation and security.

About the
IEEE Standards Association
The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA), a global standards-setting
body, develops consensus standards through an open process that
brings diverse parts of an industry together. It has a portfolio
of more than 870 completed standards and more than 400 in development.
IEEE-SA promotes the engineering process by creating, developing,
integrating, sharing and applying knowledge about electro- and
information technologies and sciences for the benefit of humanity
and the profession. For further information on IEEE-SA visit:

The IEEE has more than 380,000 members in approximately 150 countries.
Through its members, the organization is a leading authority on
areas ranging from aerospace, computers and telecommunications
to biomedicine, electric power and consumer electronics. The IEEE
produces nearly 30 percent of the world's literature in the electrical
and electronics engineering, computing and control technology
fields. This nonprofit organization also sponsors or cosponsors
more than 300 technical conferences each year. Additional information
