PISCATAWAY, N.J., USA, 22 February 2006 The
IEEE-SA announces the first meeting of a study group
to identify areas of opportunity for the IEEE to support
the adoption of healthcare IT systems. The meeting
will be 29-30 March in Ottawa, Canada, at the Marriott
Ottawa Hotel, and will be hosted by Nortel.
The day and one-half event will include a review
of current healthcare IT standards activities in national
and international standards developing organizations
and the background that led to the formation of the
study group. This will be followed by interactive
presentations on perceived gaps in healthcare standards,
covering such areas ranging from reliable healthcare
networks to personalized health informatics, culminating
with the development of an action plan for specific
areas to pursue in order to complement existing health
IT standards activities. IEEE 802® Standards for
Wired and Wireless Networking and IEEE 1073
series for Medical Device Communications are examples
of where IEEE standards can contribute to the expansion
of Health IT networks.
The study group is tasked with identifying gaps in
the current health IT landscape where the IEEE could
contribute its expertise and standards-development
processes and is co-chaired by Linda Weaver, Chief
Technology Officer at Ontario, Canada's Smart Systems
for Health Agency, and by José C. Lacal, Senior
Manager of the Seamless Health Center of Excellence
at Motorola.
Those interested in attending the meeting need to
RSVP by 6 March to Cherry Tom at c.tom@ieee.org
or +1 732 465 5848. If unable to attend in person,
a toll-free teleconference bridge will be available.
Details will be provided as to teleconference arrangements.
A block of rooms have been reserved for $C139 per
night. When reserving rooms, please mention the IEEE
Health Technology Standards Study Group. An airport

is a leading authority on areas ranging from aerospace,
computers and telecommunications to biomedicine, electric
power and consumer electronics. The IEEE produces
nearly 30 percent of the world's literature in the
electrical and electronics engineering, computing
and control technology fields. This nonprofit organization
also sponsors or cosponsors more than 300 technical
