PISCATAWAY, N.J., USA, 25 June 2008 -- The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) hosted a free workshop on the use of technology standards to help lower greenhouse gases and fight global warming.
The event, "IEEE Workshop on Standards to Help Mitigate Greenhouse Gas Emissions, Global Warming, and their Impact on the Environment," was held on Friday, 13 June 2008 at the IEEE Operations Center, 445 Hoes Lane, Piscataway, NJ 08854.
The objectives of the workshop were to develop an understanding of the current standards environment relative to greenhouse gas emissions and global warming and related issues, and to determine the structure and goals for an IEEE-SA study group to explore further actions in collaboration with other key organizations within and outside of IEEE. These actions may include but are not limited to definition of future standards projects.
Topics addressed included:
ISO standards in TC 207 (Environmental Management) and TEAM (Technology Early Action Measures, Canada) documents for the power generation/electricity sector;
Energy efficiency and metrics for energy consumption of network equipment;
Carbon credits accounting/trading; and
ISO TC 211 (Geographic Information and Geomatics) and its activities in measurements for climate change.
About the IEEE Standards Association The IEEE Standards Association, a globally recognized standards-setting body, develops consensus standards through an open process that brings diverse parts of industry together. These standards set specifications and procedures based on current scientific and technological consensus. The IEEE-SA has a portfolio of over 870 active standards and more than 400 standards under development. For information on IEEE-SA visit the Standards Association website.
About IEEE IEEE is the world’s largest technical professional society. Through its more than 375,000 members in 160 countries, the organization is a leading authority on a wide variety of areas ranging from aerospace systems, computers and telecommunications to biomedical engineering, electric power and consumer electronics. Dedicated to the advancement of technology, IEEE publishes 30 percent of the world’s literature in the electrical and electronics engineering and computer science fields, and has developed nearly 900 active industry standards. The organization annually sponsors more than 850 conferences worldwide. Additional information about IEEE can be found on the IEEE website.
