PISCATAWAY, N.J., USA, 18 May 2004 The IEEE Standards Information Network has published Wireless Multimedia: A Guide to the IEEE 802.15.3™ Standard. The high-rate wireless personal area network (WPAN) guide addresses the untapped market for devices that comply with IEEE Std 802.15.3 and is part of the new IEEE Standards Wireless Network Series handbooks and guides from the IEEE.

The IEEE 802.15.3 standard enables wireless multimedia applications for portable consumer electronic devices with whole home coverage. It addresses the need for mobility, quality of service (QoS) and fast connectivity for the broad range of consumer electronic devices.

Wireless Multimedia clarifies the IEEE 802.15.3 standard for those who are implementing compliant devices and shows how the standard can be used to develop wireless multimedia applications, including: wireless surround sound speakers, portable video displays and wireless connections to flat panel displays, digital video cameras and digital still cameras. The standard also supports wireless connectivity for gaming, printers, cordless phones and other business and consumer devices. It also reviews the standard, presents implementation examples, and the rationale behind the standard.

"Reading and understanding a standards document can be a difficult task," said Bob Heile, Chair of IEEE 802.15. "This book makes it easier to understand IEEE 802.15.3 while providing sufficient technical content to assist people implementing the standard."

Written by Dr. James Gilb, Technical Editor of the IEEE 802.15.3 standard and Director of Radio Engineering for Appairent Technologies, Inc., Wireless Multimedia contains an "insider's view" of the standard in which implementation issues that are not obvious in the text of the standard are highlighted with in-depth explanations. "A standard doesn't provide the rationale for its choices, just the results. Wireless Multimedia provides the background behind the choices that were made in developing IEEE Std 802.15.3," said Jim Allen, Vice-Chair of IEEE 802.15 and IEEE 802.15.3.

Wireless Multimedia covers three main areas:

· Applications
Applications that would benefit from using IEEE 802.15.3 devices for wireless connectivity, including specific examples of how the unique properties of IEEE 802.15.3 compliant devices enable new applications.

· Implementation
Summary of the IEEE 802.15.3 standard, highlighting special areas that are key to successful implementation. Examples are included for implementers who are developing compliant devices.

· Justification
Discussion and reasoning that went into developing the standard, including background information that covers anticipated implementations and key details on architecture.
