Titles
The word "standard" is a broad term that encompasses several types
of standards that IEEE produces. There are really four categories
of IEEE standards, each with a distinct meaning.
(1) Standards:
documents with mandatory requirements
(2) Recommended practices: documents in which procedures and
positions preferred by the IEEE are presented
(3) Guides: documents in which alternative approaches to good
practice are suggested but no clear-cut recommendations are
made
(4) Trial-Use documents: publications that are effective for
not more than two years. They can be any of the categories of
standards publications listed above.
When referencing
an IEEE standard by its title, it is preferred that "IEEE" precedes
the title. For example, IEEE Standard for Scheme Programming Language.
Numbers
or Designations
IEEE standards are well-known and usually referenced by their
numbers or numeric designations. When referencing standards in
articles or news stories, it is preferred that the standard number
is preceded with "IEEE Std" or "IEEE." For example, IEEE Std 802.11(TM)
or IEEE 802.11(TM).
