For Release:
Immediate
(PISCATAWAY,
NJ, 27 August 2001) Apple® Computer received a 2001 Primetime
Emmy Engineering Award given by the Academy of Television Arts
& Sciences on 22 August 2001 for creating FireWire® technology.
This high-speed connection has become a key technology in the
television industry for moving video on and off computers.
FireWire is
now used in both the Macintosh and PC computers. It is known by
industry as IEEE
Std 1394-1995, IEEE Standard for a High Performance Serial Bus.
Developed by the IEEE Microprocessor Standards Committee, the
IEEE 1394 family of standards provides flexible and cost-effective
ways to share real-time (isochronous) information among data-intensive
applications. These standards allow "plug and play"
capability for electronic devices including printers, scanners,
cameras, Set-Top Boxes, HDTVs, camcorders and storage (Hard Disk
Drives, CD-ROM, CD-RW, ZIP Drives, etc.).
At least 200
individuals played a major role in the writing, reviewing, and
consensus-setting of IEEE 1394. Fundamental to the success of
this standard was its development under IEEE's full consensus,
voluntary standards process, and the subsequent adoption by a
critical mass of industry. Materially interested and affected
parties were represented in a balanced forum to determine the
final approval of the standard.
About the
IEEE Microprocessor Standards Committee
The IEEE Microprocessor Standards Committee is responsible for
the development of IEEE standards for the engineering of computer
systems involving microprocessor and floating-point architectures,
buses, interconnects, sensors, microprocessor operating system
interfaces, real-time operating systems, programming and object
languages, cryptographic hardware, and computer environmental
specifications. For more information on IEEE Microprocessor Standards,
visit the IEEE Microprocessor
Standards Zone or the IEEE
MSC homepage.
About the
IEEE Standards Association
The IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) is an international membership
organization serving today's industries with a complete portfolio
of standards programs. The IEEE-SA is a major contributor to the
IEEE, which is the world's largest technical professional society.
IEEE-SA membership, through its IEEE association, promotes the
engineering process by creating, developing, integrating, sharing
and applying knowledge about electro- and information technologies
and sciences for the benefit of humanity and the profession. More
information is found at http://standards.ieee.org/sa-mem/index.html
