PISCATAWAY, N.J., USA, 16 September 2008 -- 23 September 2008 -- Donald Heirman, former president of the IEEE Standards Association, will be honored for his contributions to global electrotechnical standardization with the International Electrotechnical Commission's (IEC) Lord Kelvin Award.

The Lord Kelvin Award is granted to individuals who have contributed in an exceptional, dedicated way to the technical work of the IEC in the field of electrotechnology standardization and related activities, for a significant period of time. The award takes its name from the famous British scientist and engineer who achieved celebrity by successfully laying the first commercial telegraph cable across the Atlantic ocean and who played a major role in the founding of the IEC in 1906, becoming its first president.

Heirman's work within the IEC has focused on the work of the IEC Special International Committee on Radio Interference (CISPR) where he continues to serve as technical expert. His leadership assignments have included serving as a working group chair and secretary and a subcommittee secretary and chair. He currently serves as the overall chairman of CISPR, heading its Steering Committee and chairman's advisory group.  He is also on the technical management committee of the US National Committee for IEC activity.

In addition to his work with the IEC, Heirman is past president of the IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA). He has served on the IEEE-SA Board of Governors, and held many roles in the SA Standards Board, including chairman. He has served on the IEEE Board of Directors and its Executive Committee as well as other IEEE Boards.  Heirman is a member of the IEEE Electromagnetic Compatibility Society Board of Directors, a past president, and chair of its measurements technical committee as well as currently vice president for standards of the Board.

Heirman is currently president of Don HEIRMAN Consultants, a training, standards and educational electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) consulting corporation.

"Don has been a tremendous supporter of electromagnetic compatibility standards," said Judith Gorman, Managing Director of IEEE-SA. "His work with IEEE has been invaluable, and we congratulate him on this important recognition."
The award will be presented this November in a ceremony at the IEC general meeting in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

About the IEEE Standards Association

The IEEE Standards Association, a globally recognized standards-setting body, develops consensus standards through an open process that brings diverse parts of industry together.  These standards set specifications and procedures based on current scientific and technological consensus.  The IEEE-SA has a portfolio of over 870 active standards and more than 400 standards under development.  For information on IEEE-SA see: http://standards.ieee.org/
