Piscataway, NJ, May 28, 1999 — IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA) has announced the finalization of a three-year cooperative agreement with the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI).

The formal agreement, effective since [21 April 1999], fosters a stronger relationship between the two standards bodies whereby they will be collaborating and creating a complementary approach to the standardization process and avoiding duplication of technical work. Together, IEEE-SA and ETSI are looking to facilitate international standardization by contributing to the development of global standards, particularly in the electromagnetic compatibility and radio local area network domains.

"On behalf of the IEEE Standards Association, I am particularly pleased to see agreements of this nature realized," stated Judith Gorman, Managing Director of IEEE Standards. "Expediting international standardization benefits all related constituencies. And formal standards developing organizations such as ETSI and IEEE, that share their expertise and resources particularly in the areas of fast-moving technologies, are doing the right job at the right time."

Some highlights of the IEEE-SA and ETSI agreement include the exchanging of information on programs of work in areas of mutual interest, accessibility of working documents and drafts, and the nomination of an observer from IEEE Working Groups to relevant ETSI technical bodies and vice-versa, when agendas contain items of mutual interest. In addition, ETSI may consider the conversion of IEEE outputs into ETSI deliverables by an ETSI Technical Body.

ETSI produces standards for the telecommunications, information technology and broadcasting industries. It is an open forum that unites 696 members from 50 countries, representing administrations, network operators, manufacturers, service providers, and users. The IEEE-SA is an innovative organization under which the full range of IEEE standards activities are carried out. With over 800 active standards publications and nearly 400 standards projects in development, the IEEE-SA represents technological innovation, global participation and dedication to the on-going advancement and promotion of new concepts.

The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. The members and volunteers of the IEEE are the technical and scientific professionals making the revolutionary engineering advances that are reshaping our world today. This includes the development of leading-edge electro- and information technology standards used throughout industry.
