Piscataway, NJ, April 19, 1999 - IEEE P802 LAN/MAN Standards Committee (LMSC) announces the formation of the new P802.16 Working Group to develop standards for Broadband Wireless Access (BWA). The P802.16 Working Group will concentrate on the standardization of fixed BWA systems, focussing on those operating in the licensed spectrum near 30 GHz, but intended to be broadly applicable from 10 to 66 GHz.
Developed by a study group involving 97 people from over 70 companies, the P802.16 Working Group objectives include both a coexistence specification and an air interface enabling the transport of data, voice, and video services. The result is expected to bring numerous manufacturing advantages to an industry with the potential to compete successfully by providing alternatives to wired access links that utilize fiber, cable or telephone lines.
The IEEE P802.16 Working Group on Broadband Wireless Access is part of the IEEE 802 LMSC. The IEEE 802 LMSC is sponsored by the IEEE Computer Society and submits standards through the IEEE Standards Association. The IEEE Computer Society is the oldest and largest association of computer professionals in the world. It offers its 100,000 members comprehensive program of publications, meetings, and technical and educational activities, encouraging an active exchange of information, ideas, and innovation. The society is the world's leading publisher of technical material in the computing field. Headquartered in Washington, DC, the society serves its members from offices in Los Alamitos, California, USA; Tokyo, Japan; and Brussels, Belgium.
P802.16 is also co-sponsored by the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques (MTT) Society <http://www.mtt.org>, the world's major technical organization for microwave and radio-frequency professionals and the source of premier publications and conferences in the field. The novel cooperation between IEEE's Computer and MTT Societies is vital to technical progress in the multidisciplinary field of wireless networking using microwave radio.
The IEEE is the world's largest technical professional society. The members and volunteers of the IEEE are the technical and scientific professionals making the revolutionary engineering advances that are reshaping our world today. This includes the development of leading-edge electro- and information technology standards used throughout industry.
